In Office Procedures

D&C (Dilation and Curettage)

A D&C is often performed due to 1st trimester miscarriage. This procedure may also be done to treat irregular or abnormal bleeding. During this procedure the cervix is opened and the contents of the uterus removed. Some women can safely miscarry on their own without a D&C; however, in situations where the miscarriage is incomplete, a D&C will need to be performed. Whether or not to have a D&C following a miscarriage is something to discuss with your healthcare provider. A D&C may be performed in the office or at the hospital.

ThermaChoice (Endometrial Ablation)

Endometrial Ablation uses a thermal device to safely ablate the lining of the uterus. The endometrium heals and the changed nature of the lining can reduce or prevent uterine bleeding. Hysteroscopy may or may not be performed at the same time. Endometrial Ablation can be done at the hospital or in the office.

Essure

Essure is a procedure that results in permanent sterilization. Essure is considered permanent and is a safe, effective option for patients that do not plan to have any more children. During the Essure procedure a micro-insert is placed in each fallopian tube. Tissue then grows around the micro-insert creating a barrier between the sperm and the egg, resulting in permanent sterilization. A follow up procedure is required to ensure the tubes are completely blocked. The Essure procedure may be done at the hospital or in the office.

IUD (Intrauterine Device)

An IUD is a long term birth control device that can be inserted into the uterus by your healthcare provider. This device prevents sperm from joining with an egg as well as changing the lining of the uterus to prevent an egg from implanting. The IUD is a small T-shaped device made of plastic. There are two types of IUDs. One type of IUD is wrapped in copper and this type of IUD can be kept in place for up to ten years. A second type of IUD releases a form of progesterone (hormone). This type of IUD can be left in place for up to five years. IUDs must be inserted and removed in clinic by your healthcare provider.

Implanon

Implanon is long term birth control device that can be inserted by your healthcare provider. Implanon is a small hormonal contraceptive that is inserted under the skin in your upper arm. This is a hormonal method of birth control that stops your ovary from releasing an egg. It also keep sperm from reaching the egg and prevents the egg from implanting by changing the lining of your uterus. The Implanon device can remain in place for up to three years.
